The top-ranked Wayne State volleyball team opened a key weekend road swing with a straight-set win over No. 6 St. Cloud State, winning 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.
The win put the Wildcats at 13-1 overall and they are the only unbeaten team in conference play with a 4-0 mark.
Wayne State made key plays to win each of the first two sets, then held off a Husky rally in the final set to finish off the three-game sweep.
SCSU led 20-18 in the first before Wayne State rallied with three in a row to take the lead. Tied at 23-23, Kelsie Cada came through with a kill and Rachel Walker served up the game-winning service ace to make it 1-0.
In the second set, neither team led by more than three as there were 16 ties and six lead changes. Again, with the score tied 23-23, Wayne got the win thanks to a kill by Taya Beller and a Husky attack error.
Wayne State led all the way in the final set, leading by as many as seven before the Huskies closed to within four at 18-14. Cada’s kill sealed the three-set win for the Wildcats.
Three Wildcats were in double figures in kills, led by Cada’s 15. Beller had 13 kills and Maggie Brahmer added 11. Rachel Walker had 37 assists and two ace serves. Brahmer led the defense with six blocks while Cada added three. Jordan McCormick added 15 digs.
The Wildcats are back in action Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest at No. 10 Minnesota Duluth.
