Tri County Northeast claims Hartington-Newcastle Invite, Winside finishes sixth

Both Tri County Northeast and Winside high school volleyball teams traveled to the Hartington-Newcastle Invite on Oct. 11.

From Hartington, Tri County Northeast won the Hartington-Newcastle Invite winning all three of their matches while Winside went 0-3 and suffered a loss in the fifth place match.

In pool play, the Allen/Emerson-Hubbard co-op first swept the host Wildcats (25-17, 25-18) before winning in three sets over Wausa (25-16, 18-25, 25-18).

During the finals, Tri County Northeast swept Bloomfield (25-21, 25-19).

Over the weekend, junior Joslyn Mackling led the Wolfpack with 30 kills, 22 digs and six service aces followed by senior Kiya Tornez who added 22 kills, 10 digs and three aces.

Sophomore Ally Belt finished with 55 assists, 18 digs and two aces while junior Emily Mitchell led the Wolfpack with 26 digs

Freshman DeLaney Fuchser tallied nine kills and eight solo blocks as junior Aubrey Mitchell had seven service aces.

On Oct. 9 in a five-set home loss (Allen) to Homer (22-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 14-16), Belt surpassed 1,000 career assists and Mackling eclipsed 500 career kills. Earlier this season, Tornez also reached the 500-career kill mark.

The Wolfpack (17-4) will next travel to the Winside triangular on Tuesday, Oct. 14 along with Hartington-Newcastle starting at 5:30 p.m.

Winside began pool play with a 2-0 loss to Bloomfield (22-25, 18-25) followed by a three set loss against Madison (25-11, 22-25, 21-25).

In the fifth place match, Winside suffered a 2-0 loss against Wausa (15-25, 20-25).

For the weekend, freshman Aftyn Schutt led the Wildcats with 26 kills, 16 digs, three service aces and two blocks (one solo).

Junior Katelyn Jaeger added 10 kills, 21 digs and two aces.

Junior Ellie Topp (three blocks) tallied seven kills, 13 digs and two aces.

Junior Hadleigh Schutt (four aces) finished with 30 assists, 15 digs and six kills as freshman Tinsley Schwedhelm (one block, one ace) had 26 assists, 13 digs and nine kills.

Senior Jerzi Carlson recorded a team-high 26 digs.

The Winside Wildcats (9-11) will next host both Tri County Northeast and Hartington-Newcastle for a triangular on Tuesday, Oct. 14 starting at 5:30 p.m.
