Trio of Mustang double figure leaders pull away from Wakefield, Paredes drops 20 for Trojan boys to win

For a second time this week, the Wakefield girls and boys basketball teams were in action on their home court.

From the main gym in Wakefield, the Trojans hosted Stanton.

The Wakefield girls suffered a 58-30 loss while the Trojan boys won 52-36.

In the girls game, Stanton built a 13-4 first quarter lead before using a 17-9 second quarter to lead 30-13 at the break. The Mustangs outscored Wakefield, 15-8 in the third and 13-9 in the fourth. Final favored Stanton winning 58-30 to improve to 3-2 as the Trojans fell to 0-6.

Wakefield was led by junior Ashlyn Riewer with 11 points while senior Alli Brown followed with eight points.

Other scoring came from junior Sierra Kaufman with six points, sophomore Montse Avila added three points as sophomore Boston Brown finished with two points.

The Trojans shot 6-10 from the foul line.

Stanton leaders were senior Kelby Pohlman with 16 points (four made three’s) as junior Skyler Siebrandt and senior Olivia Hupp both scored 10 points.

The Mustangs finished 5-8 at the charity stripe.

During the boys outing, Wakefield held a slight 11-10 lead after the opening quarter and then followed with a 21-2 second to put the Trojans up 32-12 at the break. Stanton kept it close thanks to a 17-9 third as Wakefield won the fourth, 11-7. Final favored the host Trojans winning 52-36 picking up back-to-back victories now at 2-4 as Stanton fell to 0-5.

Wakefield was led by junior Brandon Paredes with 20 points as senior Timothy Kaufman and junior Cael Johnson both followed with seven points.

Other scoring came from junior Jacob Birkley and junior Jacob Borg each with six points; senior Jesse Lundahl tallied four points as junior Ryan Bruns finished with two points.

The Trojans shot 5-18 at the foul line.

Senior Barrett Wilkie was Stanton’s top scorer with 14 points (12 in second half).

The Mustangs finished 1-14 at the charity stripe.

The Wakefield girls and boys basketball teams will be off until the Summerland Holiday Tournament in Ewing on Friday, Dec. 27. The Trojans open with Ainsworth at 3/4:30 p.m. while the host Summerland follows with Winside at 6/7:30 p.m.

Also, the Wakefield vs. Wisner-Pilger basketball games were rescheduled to Monday, Jan. 13.

Stanton will host Pender on Saturday followed by the moratorium break before hosting Twin River along with Tri County and Neligh-Oakdale during the Stanton Holiday Tournament beginning on Friday, Dec. 27.
