Four of the five Wayne Herald area high school volleyball teams along with Wayne High softball were in action on September 2.
Wayne hosted West Holt and swept the Huskies (25-17, 25-13, 25-16) to improve to 2-0. The Blue Devils will next compete in the Northeast Nebraska Jean Groth Volleyball Classic September 4 and September 6 joining 11 other teams at two locations.
Wayne will compete in Pool B from the Wisner-Pilger new gym and face the host Gators at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday followed by a match against West Point-Beemer at 6:30 p.m. Wisner-Pilger will close pool play against West Point-Beemer around 7:30 p.m. Teams will be placed in Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions for Saturday.
The Blue Devil softball team traveled to Wahoo to face Bishop Neumann and suffered a 9-1 loss which snapped a five-game winning streak. Wayne (5-2) will next host South Sioux City on Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m. This will mark Dirt Devil softball night where all Dirt Devil players will receive free admission if they where a jersey or shirt.
Wayne will then travel to Papillion Landing for the NFCA Kaiti Williams Memorial Leadoff Class Tournament hosted by Papillion LaVista on both Friday and Saturday, September 5-6. WHS will open Friday against Millard North at 1:30 p.m. and also face Fossil Ridge (Fort Collins, CO) at 5 p.m.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge entertained Ponca and swept the Indians (25-18. 25-16, 25-17) to improve to 3-0. The Bears are right back in action Thursday at Elkhorn Valley starting at 5 p.m.
Winside traveled to O'Neill and suffered a loss in straight sets against St. Mary's (21-25, 13-25, 21-25). Winside is now 2-3 and is off until September 9 hosting Wynot starting at 6 p.m.
Wakefield visited Battle Creek and suffered a loss in straight sets (11-25, 13-25, 8-25) falling to 0-2. The Trojans will join Wayne in the Northeast Nebraska Jean Groth Volleyball Classic September 4 and September 6.
Wakefield will compete in Pool D from the Auxiliary Gym at Wisner-Pilger on Thursday playing in the final two matches against Archbishop Bergan (Fremont) at 6:30 p.m. and GACC (West Point) at 7:30 p.m. Match one will open with GACC vs. Bergan at 5:30 p.m. before being placed in a divisional round on Saturday.
