All five Wayne Herald area high school basketball teams, Wayne bowling (coming soon) along with a trio of boys wrestling programs took over Dec. 30 sporting action.

Back at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls began the 2025 Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust Great Northeast Shootout with a 55-52 victory while the LCC boys suffered a 66-20 loss to Omaha Concordia in the consolation round.

The LCC girls (5-3) will face Cedar Catholic during fifth place game at Wayne High School at 12:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

The LCC boys (3-5) will end the Wayne Tourney in seventh place (only seven teams in boys division).

Later in the evening, the Wayne girls suffered a 53-41 loss against West Central (SD) while the Blue Devil boys won their fifth straight thanks to a 41-32 victory over Cedar Catholic in the winner's bracket.

The Wayne girls (6-3) and boys (6-2) will conclude the 2025 Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust Wayne Holiday Tournament on Dec. 31 at Rice.

The Blue Devil girls will face Pierce at 11 a.m. during the third place game while the Wayne boys will match-up against Pierce at 3:30 p.m. in the finals.

From Wildcat Lanes in Wayne, the Wayne bowling program welcomed Boone Central, Columbus Lakeview and Hartington-Newcastle during the Wayne Holiday Invite.

The Wayne girls (15-1) and boys (14-2) both won their home holiday tournament for the fifth straight year while also sweeping the top three in each division of the all-tournament team.

The Wayne High bowling program will host their third straight event with Norfolk Catholic in town on Jan. 8 at 4:30 p.m. for a dual.

From Newman Grove during the Newman Grove/St. Edward Holiday Invite, the Tri County Northeast boys wrestlers finished 11th (44 pts), followed by Winside in 13th (32.5) and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge placed 16th (20) among the 19 teams.

TCNE was led by a runner-up finish from Landon Newton (126).

Braxten Sebade (150) and Nate Franzluebbers (285) both took sixth.

Top Winside medalists were posted by Braxten Hansen (120) and Landon Carlson (157) both in fourth as Sratton Sellin (165) took sixth.

LCC was led by a silver medal from Jake Lipp (190).

The Tri County Northeast boys wrestlers will next travel to the Pender duals on Jan. 6 at 4:30 p.m.

The Winside boys wrestling team will be off until they host their own invite on Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. (girls on Jan. 10).

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys wrestlers will return to the mat during the Winside Invite on Jan. 9 at 10 a.m.

Both Winside and Wakefield basketball programs closed out the second and final day of the Summerland Holiday Tournament.

The Winside girls (3-6) finished runner-up following a 49-38 loss to Summerland while the Winside boys (4-5) lost 67-49 to Ainsworth in the third place game.

Winside will next travel to Lyons-Decatur on Jan. 2 at 6/7:45 p.m.

The Wakefield girls (0-10) lost 48-28 to Ainsworth to finish fourth while the Wakefield boys (7-3) had their seven-game winning streak snapped following a 71-66 loss in overtime to Summerland during the finals.

Wakefield is off until Jan. 6 traveling to Norfolk to face Lutheran High Northeast at 6/7:30 p.m.


Tri County Northeast concluded the Stanton Holiday Tournament.

The Allen/Emerson-Hubbard co-op girls (3-5) suffered a 61-42 loss to Stanton in the finals while the Wolfpack boys (2-6) secured a 65-41 victory over Stanton during the third place game.

The TCNE boys will host Cornerstone Christian for boys only action on Jan. 2 in Emerson starting at 4 p.m. before the Wolfpack girls return to the court on Jan. 5 hosting Bancroft-Rosalie with the boys team in Emerson starting at 4 p.m.
