Wayne Country Club was the scene for the annual Men's Open on Sunday as more than 100 golfers took to the links.
Former Wayne State basketball standout Vance Janssen left his mark on the course with a two-under par victory over the 27-hole event, his first title in Wayne.
The Blair native carded a 73 in the opening 18 holes which left him with a one shot lead over WCC golf professional Kyle Schellpeper and Brook Klinetobe which included an eagle on the par four, fifth hole.
The Elkhorn pharmacist raced to a comfortable lead over the final nine holes with four straight birdies after opening the round with a par. He would also birdie the final hole to secure the two-shot victory.
Schellpeper closed out the final nine holes with seven pars and birdies on holes two and nine. Third place honors went to Casey Brentlinger with a 110 (35-40-35) while another former Wayne golf standout Ryan Sturm placed fourth at 112 (37-39-36). Rounding the top five was Brook Klinetobe at 113.
Jason Peterson and Jim Dickerson tied for sixth place as each carded 114 while WCC member Brett Koester was eighth with a 115, one stroke ahead of a pair of Wayne golf club members Doug Rose and Tyler Vaughn at 116.
There were four flights of players in addition to the championship flight. The placers were scored by net finishes and not gross scores. The first flight was won by Luke Kalin and three under par 69 while Dave Anderson was runner-up at two under par 70. Sam Prue (73), Bill Delano (73), Brad Penlerick (73) followed in order with RW Eakes (74) and Greg Grass (74) rounding out the placers.
Second flight champ was Trevor Beza at five under par 67 with Jared Bemis placing runner-up at one under par 71. Connor Fillipi and Bryan Diediker tied for third with 72's with Turner Dahl and Todd Heithoff tying for fifth place with 74's.
Third flight winners including a tie at the top with Victor Avila and Jason Berg carding three under par 69's. There was a four-way tie for third place at even par 72 with Luis Godinez, Tony Pimentel, Brian Goodwin and Dave Beetley.
The fourth flight was won by Efron Godinez at one under par 71. Angel Tello and Joel Jorgensen tied for second with 73's while BJ Young finished fourth at 74. Corey Dahl, Spencer Moore, Lucas Munter and Brian Gibson tied for fifth place with 75's.
