VanDonkersgoed, Noll go off for 21 points each

Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams closed out their road weekend on Saturday with two players hitting 21 points but fell behind in the rebounding battle.

From Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, Minnesota, the Wildcats competed against Minnesota Duluth on Saturday.

The Wayne State College women suffered a 62-56 loss while the Wildcat men fell 83-66 at UMD.

In the women’s game, Minnesota Duluth led 22-14 after the first quarter followed by the Wildcats answering with a 13-10 second. UMD led 32-27 at the break. The Bulldogs led at-most by 15 points late in the third and began to pull away with a 19-12 third. WSC won the fourth, 17-11. Final favored Minnesota Duluth winning 62-56 securing back-to-back wins improving to 4-6 (2-3 NSIC) while the Wildcats fell to 4-5 (1-4 NSIC).

Wayne State College was led in scoring by junior Kylah VanDonkersgoed (8-16 FG/3-6 3PT/2-4 FT) with 21 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks and senior Tate Norblade (3-5 FG/0-1 3PT/4-4 FT) followed with 10 points, five rebounds, one steal and one block.

Other scoring came from senior Carsyn Boswell (one rebound) with nine points; four-point scoring came from senior Maya Fitzpatrick (two rebounds/two assists/two steals/one block) and sophomore Brooklyn Kruse (four rebounds/two assists) as two-point scoring came from junior Meg Rietz (two rebounds/three assists/two steals), senior Delaney Clark (four rebounds/two assists), senior Abby Kopecky (two rebounds/one assist/two steals) and junior Rachel Dahlen.

The Wildcats shot 21-61 (34.4%) from the field, 5-23 (21.7%) from the three-point line and 9-15 (60%) at the charity stripe.

Minnesota Duluth leaders were Johanna Miller with 19 points and eight rebounds; Claire Bjorge followed with 16 points as Myra Moorjani added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Bulldogs finished 24-55 (43.6%) from the floor, 5-12 (41.7%) from behind the arc and 9-13 (69.2%) from the foul line.

Minnesota Duluth outrebounded Wayne State College, 45-32 including 11 to 10 offensively which led to 12 second chance points compared to 10 second chance points for WSC. Wayne State College scored 11 points off of 15 Bulldog turnovers while Minnesota Duluth scored 11 points off of eight Wildcat turnovers.

Minnesota Duluth won the battle in the paint (34-30) and fast break scoring (4-2) as WSC won bench scoring (10-7).

During the men’s outing, there were seven ties and six lead changes in the first half which showcased Minnesota Duluth out front, 37-32. The Bulldogs built their lead to at-most 24 points late in the game and outscored WSC, 46-34 in the second half. Final favored Minnesota Duluth winning 83-66. The Bulldogs have won back-to-back improving to 7-3 (2-2 NSIC) while the Wildcats dropped back-to-back falling to 7-4 (1-4 NSIC).

Wayne State College was led in scoring by freshman Matt Noll (8-12 FG/1-2 3PT/4-9 FT) with 21 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block while fifth-year senior Jay Saunders (4-9 FG/1-3 3PT/2-3 FT) followed with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and one steal.

Other scoring came from freshman Nassir Binion (two rebounds/one steal) with seven points; junior transfer Kai Smith (two rebounds/one assist/one steal) added six points; five-point scoring came from sophomore JJ Ferrin (one assist/two steals) and sophomore Landon Classen (one rebound/three steals/three blocks); fifth-year senior Sean Stokes (one rebound/one assist) tacked on four points; junior Ryan Blum (one rebound/one assist) tallied three points as two-point scoring came from redshirt freshman Aiden Sullivan (one rebound) and sophomore Wade Voss.

The Wildcats shot 24-53 (45.3%) from the field, 8-23 (34.8%) from the three-point line and 10-16 (62.5%) at the charity stripe.

Minnesota Duluth leaders were Joshua Brown (four made three’s) with 18 points and nine rebounds; Charlie Katona followed with 16 points and Jayden Johnson (four made three’s) tallied 14 points.

The Bulldogs finished 32-58 (55.2%) from the floor, 11-22 (50%) from behind the arc and 8-14 (57.1%) from the foul line.

Minnesota Duluth outrebounded Wayne State College, 41-20 including 14 to four offensively which led to 18 second chance points compared to two second chance points for WSC. Wayne State College scored 21 points off of 10 Bulldog turnovers while Minnesota Duluth scored 13 points off of eight Wildcat turnovers.

Minnesota Duluth won the battle in the paint (42-28) and bench scoring (32-25) as WSC won the fast break scoring (10-5).

The Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams will next host Augustana University on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3:30/5:30 p.m., which will close out their pre-holiday schedule
