Vasa leads Wildcats to home sweep over Beavers

Junior leftfielder Morgan Vasa collected five hits and scored five runs on the day to lead Wayne State to a 4-2, 8-3 sweep over Bemidji State Monday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference softball action at the Chapman Complex.

Wayne State used three hits to score two runs in the first inning of the opener. Vasa got her first hit of the day after a Katelyn Wobken walk, and Emily Chandler and Rachel Shumaker singled to score Vasa and Wobken to make it a 2-0 game.

Bemidji State got a solo homer in the third, but Wayne State got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Vasa singled and scored on an Alyx Hagen single. They added an insurance run in the fifth when Hagen brought home Vasa on a sacrifice fly to go on to the first-game win.

Vasa had three of Wayne State’s 10 hits in the opener, with Emily Chandler adding two hits. Maddie Moser went the distance, striking out three and allowing five hits and seven walk.

In the nightcap, Bemidji State scored three runs early, but Wayne State wasted no time in answering as they batted around and matched the Beavers’ first-inning effort.

Wobken got the Wildcats started with a solo blast to center field, Vasa’s bat stayed hot as she singled and scored on an Abbie Hix single, and Taylor Menard brought Hix home with a hit to make it a 3-3 game.

Wayne State added two more in the second when Wobken doubled and scored on an error and Vasa singled and scored on a Hagen single. Menard singled in the third and scored on a Wobken sacrifice fly, while Annie Grammar singled and came home on a Bemidji State error.

Wobken closed out the scoring in the sixth when she scored on an RBI single by Chandler, helping Wayne State cap the doubleheader sweep.

Riley Vanderveen got the win, going the distance with four strikeouts and no earned runs. Five players each had two hits in Wayne State’s 13-hit attack, as Wobken, Vasa, Chandler, Hix and Mernard all had two hits in the win.

Wayne State (15-24, 9-11 NSIC) will be on the road Wednesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Southwest Minnesota State.
