Verna Mae (Hansen) Rohde was born Sept. 2, 1945 to Laurence Johannas and Frances Mary (Pippitt) Hansen in Wayne. She was baptized March 31, 1946 and confirmed May 17, 1959 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wayne. She attended country school and graduated from Wayne High School in 1963. She met Ronald Rohde in late May of 1963 and they were married  Nov. 17, 1963 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wayne. This past Sunday they would have celebrated 61 years of marriage.

She enjoyed her time with the neighbor ladies, meeting monthly playing cards and eating desserts. She and Ron were members of the Carroll Saddle Club, meeting every Wednesday night. Many Saturdays were spent on trail rides with friends and carrying flags in area town parades and for the River City Round Up. They played many hours of canasta with their good neighbors and friends Bill and Sandra Brudigan, lots of games of 31 played with Andy and Mary Anderson and much time spent together as families with Dennis and Deb Jensen. Many trips were made to eat pizza at Euni’s Palace in Dixon. Verna Mae and Ron drove often to Carroll to check cows and chat with Kenny and Deb Hall.

Verna Mae loved her Cornhuskers and cheering on the football team. She was definitely known for her spunk and sassiness, and she would correct you if you called her “Verna”, as she went by Verna Mae. She was an amazing cook and baker and her family was always well fed.
