All five area Wayne Herald high school volleyball programs will open their respective conference tournaments in mid-October.
Wayne High (17-11) will compete in the play-in match of the Mid State Conference Tourney. The Blue Devils will face Crofton on Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m. in West Point (GACC) with the winner to compete against GACC later that evening. The in-between match will be Pierce vs. Boone Central.
From Norfolk Catholic, O'Neill and Ponca will open Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m. with the winner to face the host Knights later that evening. The middle match will showcase Battle Creek vs. Cedar Catholic.
Matches on Oct. 21 will be hosted by Battle Creek (Monday winners) and Norfolk Catholic (Monday losers). The Mid State Conference fifth place (4:30 p.m.), consolation (6 p.m.) and finals (7:30 p.m.) will be played on Oct. 23 at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.
First round tourney play will open for Wakefield (1-21) on Oct. 16 during the East Husker Conference. The 13th seeded Trojans will travel to #4 Howells-Dodge and open at 5 p.m. The winner will face the #5 North Bend Central/#12 Tekamah-Herman winner later that evening.
Consolation and finals are slated for Oct. 18 in Madison.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge has earned the #1 seed for the Greater Northeast Activities Conference which will begin on Oct. 18. LCC (24-3) will host #8 Hartington-Newcastle at 2 p.m. The loser will play the loser of either #4 Lutheran High Northeast or #5 Plaivew later that evening while the winner's will square off on Oct. 21 in the semifinal round.
The GNAC consolation and finals are set for Oct. 24 hosted by West Holt in Atkinson.
Both Tri County Northeast and Winside will compete in the Lewis and Clark Conference tournament as each team received a first round bye. Play-in matches will open on Oct. 18.
On Oct. 20 from Homer #2 Tri County Northeast (19-4) will await the second lowest seed while in Randolph, #5 Winside (10-12) will face #4 Homer. A win or loss will showcase one more match later that evening.
Teams who go 2-0 or drop their second match (after starting 1-0) will advance to the Lewis and Clark Conference consolation and finals set for Oct. 21 in Randolph.
