The No. 3-ranked Wayne State volleyball team had no problem improving to 6-0 on the season with two straight-set wins in the Thunderwolves Classic Friday in Pueblo, Colo.
The Wildcats opened with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 win over Nova Southeastern of Florida. Wayne State hit .219 for the match while limiting their opponent to a .090 attack percentage. Michaela Mestl had 16 kills and 13 digs to lead the way, while Alyssa Frauendorfer added nine kills and Natalie Vondrak had eight kills, 12 digs and five blocks. Alex Opperman had eight blocks and Megan Gebhardt had 32 assists.
In the second game, the Wildcats cruised past the host CSU Pueblo squad, winning 25-15, 25-14, 25-17. The Thunderwolves were limited to a .061 hitting percentage while the Wildcats hit at a .318 clip to stay undefeated. Mestl had 11 kills and 14 digs while Vondrak added 10 kills and 12 digs. Frauendorfer had nine kills and two aces, Gebhardt had 32 assists and Haley Kauth had 10 digs.
Wayne State faces Texas A&M Kingsville and Western State in action Saturday.
