A trio of boys will make up this years Wakefield golf team which began practice on March 17 working on the driving range and on the course at the Wayne Country Club.
Scott Hansen will bring three years of head golf coach experience from Tri County Northeast (Allen/Emerson-Hubbard) as a first year head boys golf coach in Wakefield.
With the low numbers, a plus is working more with each golfer by finding their strengths and weaknesses and seeing what they can improve on.
Coach Hansen said once the spring weather settles in and they’re able to get back on the course, the Trojans will review the rules.
“Just kind of what to do in certain situations,” said Hansen. “If you have an out of bounds ball what do you do, if you can’t find a ball what do you do. Just go over the basic rules so that way they understand the game going into the first golf tournament.”
Coach Hansen was in Emerson for 14 years before accepting a position in Wakefield. AJ Johnson has helped in previous years and will provide additional knowledge of the game of golf.
Juniors Jacob Birkley and Lane Fischer along with freshman Drew Kubik will represent Wakefield boys golf. The Trojans will not be eligible for state needing four to qualify team scores during regular season competition.
With no golf course in Wakefield, the Wayne Country Club will be the home course for the Trojans who will be practicing in Wayne as well.
Coach Hansen would like to thank Kyle and the Wayne Country Club.
“We appreciate everything that they allow us to do going over there,” Hansen added. “They really treat us well. Just getting that experience on a good, well taken care of golf course, works out really great for the team. It is a top notch golf course in northeast Nebraska. Just being able to play on that and get a really good experience.”
The Wakefield boys golf team will open their season on Tuesday, April 8 during the nine-hole Quadrangular from Twin Creeks Golf Club in Pender along with Lyons-Decatur Northeast and Clarkson-Leigh. The first 18-hole invite will be on Wednesday, April 16 from the Club 91 Golf Course in Leigh.
The goal is to bring four+ golfers in future years, but competing as individuals this year, coach Hansen mentioned he wants to see the Wakefield boys golfers play their best at the end of the season.
“Just to hit your peak performance when you’re coming into conference and district golf you really want to hit that peak performance at that time,” Hansen mentioned. “So, you’re just working on the small things up to that point to hopefully get your game together at the right moment and be able to break through at districts.”
A ‘home’ contest will take place at the Wayne Country Club on Tuesday, May 13 during the Wakefield Invite.
