WISNER – The Wakefield Post 81 American Legion Seniors struck first, but top-seeded West Point had too many answers as they handed Wakefield a 9-1 defeat to eliminate their state tourney hopes in the Class C, Area 2 tournament Monday at Wisner City Park.
Ben Klein got Wakefield on the board in the first when he doubled to right and scored on Noah Braun's sacrifice fly to left. West Point would answer, though, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings to take control of the game.
A two-run single by Bryan Rief keyed West Point's first-inning surge, and West Point took advantage of two Wakefield errors in the second to plate three more runs and take a 6-1 advantage.
Wakefield had chances to score and get back in the game, but could not get another run across. Wakefield got their first two batters on in the second, but Micah Sprouls got caught in a rundown after Isaac Camarena struck out and was picked off. Wakefield also had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, but West Point pitcher Tate Toelle was able to get out of both jams unscathed.
Wakefield's last opportunity came in the seventh. Noah Lamprecht reached on an error and moved to third on two wild pitches, but was gunned down at home on a fielder's choice by Parker Lehmkuhl. Lehmkuhl advanced to second on another wild pitch, but was unable to come home.
Wakefield was limited to two hits by West Point, with Klein's first-inning double and Lamprecht's fourth-inning double the only hits of the game. Camarena took the loss for Wakefield, which finished the season 18-19.
