Wakefield falls twice at Ponca, Indians kept Trojans scoreless in first quarters

Two past Lewis and Clark Conference teams, battled in non-conference play Thursday evening in northeast Nebraska.

From Ponca, Wakefield visited the Indians who is now a member of the Mid State Conference while the Trojans moved to the East Husker Conference.

The Wakefield girls suffered a 44-31 loss while the Wakefield boys dropped a 46-31 decision against Ponca.

In the girls game, Ponca led 8-0 after the first quarter as the Indians extended their lead thanks to a 10-8 second quarter to go up 18-8 at the break. Ponca outscored Wakefield, 19-10 as Wakefield won the fourth, 13-7. Final favored Ponca winning 44-31 improving to 6-6 while the visiting Trojans fell to 2-8.

Wakefield leaders were sophomore Boston Brown with 10 points followed by junior Ashlyn Riewer with nine points on three made three’s.

Other scoring came from sophomore Monste Avila with five points, junior Sierra Kaufman tallied four points, senior Alli Brown added two points as senior Isabella Andrade scored a point.

The Trojans made five three’s and shot 6-8 from the foul line.

Ponca was led in scoring by sophomore Elsie Keller with 12 points followed by sophomore Jalen Templeman with eight points.

Ponca finished with four three’s and 6-14 from the charity stripe.

During the boys outing, Ponca jumped ahead 13-0 after the first quarter as Wakefield answered with a 15-12 second quarter. At the break, Ponca led 25-15. Wakefield cut into the deficit thanks to a 10-7 third as Ponca followed with a 14-6 fourth. Final favored Ponca winning 46-31 winning their ninth straight to now sit 10-1 as Wakefield fell to 3-7.

Wakefield leaders were junior Jacob Birkley with 18 points on four made three’s.

Other scoring came from senior Tim Kaufman with three points as two-point scoring came from junior Brandon Paredes, junior Jacob Borg, junior Cael Johnson, senior Jesse Lundahl and junior Ryan Bruns.

The Trojans made five three’s and shot 0-3 from the foul line.

Ponca was led in scoring by senior Tucker McGill with 13 points and senior Austin Dendinger added 11 points.

The Indians made eight three pointers and finished 4-6 from the charity stripe.
