Another year of eight-man football will be on the schedule for Wakefield with each of their games being a playoff game.

The Trojans will have 26 members on the team.

Mike Hassler will be starting his 20th overall year coaching Wakefield football and has been the head coach since 2011.

Coach Hassler said the first two weeks is meant to focus on yourself.

“Getting drills in that tie into what your running defensively and offensively,” said Hassler. “The first two weeks, you get out there and you try to get installed what you do. That’s what football is usually a big part of it. You want to make the teams adjust to you, you don’t want to go out there and adjust to the other team.”

Joining coach Hassler as assistant coaches will be Garek Bebee, Will Tietmeyer, Chad Metzler, Colton McCreary, Evan Donner, Joe Kvidera and Brent Schmidt

With Wakefield being a baseball town, the Trojans got in the weight room and got together as a team over the summer to focus on themselves..

Wakefield seniors will be Jesse Lundahl, Adrian Flores (four year starter on defense), Timothy Kaufman (four-year starter on defense) and Jason Lopez.

Along with the four seniors, coach Hassler highlighted additional players.

“Junior-wise Jacob Borg will be a big one, he’s are quarterback,” Hassler added. “Mason Lamprecht and Cael Johnson are two others and then Ruben Vega and Benny Palma.”

Offensive line will showcase some first-time starters but due to injuries last year, a lot of younger players received additional playing time.

Since 2014, Wakefield football has been ineligible for the playoffs and has had to opt down a class. The last time Wakefield qualified for the playoffs was in 2012.

Coach Hassler mentioned Wakefield football will look to cherish all eight games.

“So, I do really believe that our kids do take a moment to cherish every game we get,” Hassler mentioned. “We really focus on all eight games. So, that’s what we’ll be doing once again this year.”

Among the eight competitive games, Wakefield football will open their regular season traveling to Wausa and face Wausa-Osmond on Friday, Aug. 30 starting at 7 p.m.
