Wakefield girls fall behind early, Trojan boys hand Bancroft-Rosalie second loss of season

A mid-Jan. East Husker Conference regular season showdown took over the Thursday night schedule for Wakefield.

From Bancroft-Rosalie Community Schools in Bancroft, the Wakefield girls and boys basketball teams visited Bancroft-Rosalie.

The Wakefield girls suffered a 57-15 loss while the Trojan boys picked up a 53-51 victory against the host Panthers.

In the girls outing, Bancroft-Rosalie jumped ahead early thanks to a 17-2 first quarter before adding a 17-4 second to go up 34-6 at the break. The Panthers outscored Wakefield, 11-7 in the third and 12-2 in the fourth. Final favored Bancroft-Rosalie winning 57-15 to improve to 5-7 as the Trojans fell to 2-10 dropping their third straight.

Wakefield leaders were sophomore Boston Brown with eight points while junior Ashlyn Riewer added three points. Two point scoring came from sophomore Montse Avila and senior Alli Brown.

Bancroft-Rosalie was led in scoring by sophomore Bailey Murphy with 13 points while senior Kairece Morris added 12 points

During the boys game, Bancroft-Rosalie jumped ahead 24-9 after the first quarter before Wakefield answered with an 18-9 second quarter. The host Panthers still led 33-27 at the break. Wakefield then won a low scoring third quarter, 8-5 before also winning the fourth, 18-13. Final favored Wakefield with a 53-51 victory to improve to 5-7 winning back-to-back as the Panthers fell to 10-2 having a two-game winning streak snapped.

Unofficial Wakefield leaders were junior Cael Johnson with 18 points, junior Jacob Borg tallied 14 points as junior Jacob Birkley followed with seven points.

Other scoring came from senior Timothy Kaufman scored six points (also made a three-pointer with about three minutes left in the game to take the lead late, correction from broadcast who will be tabbed as player of the game) as junior Brandon Paredes and senior Jesse Lundahl both tacked on four points.

Bancroft-Rosalie was led in scoring by sophomore KJ Blackhawk with 18 points followed by sophomore Jaden Browning with 13 points.
