After competing last on Dec. 27 – 28 during the Summerland Holiday Tournament, both Wakefield girls and boys basketball teams were back on their home court in early January.
From the main gym in Wakefield, the Trojans entertained Lutheran High Northeast.
The Wakefield girls picked up a 46-25 victory while the Trojan boys suffered a 54-41 loss against the visiting LHNE Eagles on Tuesday.
In the girls game, Wakefield led 9-2 after the first quarter and added to their lead thanks to a 9-6 second to go up 18-8 at the half. The Trojans then pulled away during an 18-2 third quarter as the visiting Eagles won the fourth, 15-10. Final favored Wakefield winning 46-25 marking their second straight victory improving to 2-7 as Lutheran High Northeast fell to 2-10 dropping their seventh consecutive game.
Wakefield leaders were sophomore Boston Brown with 15 points while junior Ashlyn Riewer made three three-pointers to follow with 12 points.
Other scoring came from sophomore Montse Avila with seven points; senior Alli Brown added five points; junior Sierra Kaufman tallied four points; freshman Rylee Reaves scored two points as senior Isabella Andrade tacked on a point.
The Trojans shot 8-14 from the foul line.
Lutheran High Northeast was led in scoring by sophomore McKenzie McDonald scoring all 11 points in the final quarter including three made three’s.
The Eagles finished 5-11 at the charity stripe.
During the boys outing, both teams recorded 11 first quarter points followed by Lutheran High Northeast starting to separate following a 19-7 second quarter to go up 30-18 at half. The Eagles added to their lead thanks to a 10-8 third as Wakefield won the fourth, 15-14. Final favored Lutheran High Northeast winning 54-41 to snap a two-game losing streak improving to 7-5 as Wakefield fell to 3-6 dropping their second straight.
Wakefield leaders were junior Cael Johnson with 17 points as fellow junior Jacob Borg followed with 12 points.
Other scoring came from senior Timothy Kaufman with six points as two-point scoring came from junior Jacob Birkley, junior Brandon Paredes and senior Jesse Lundahl.
The Trojans shot 6-11 from the foul line.
The Wakefield girls and boys will both next visit Ponca on Thursday, Jan. 9.
