Wakefield, LCC sending athletes to state track

Wakefield will send three athletes to the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will have one representative after athletes qualified for state in the C-7 district meet Thursday at Russ Hochstein Field in Hartington.

Israel Gardea was a district champion for the Trojans after winning the boys shot put title with a best heave of 46 feet, 10 inches. He will be joined by teammate Solomon Peitz, who finished as runner-up in the boys triple jump with a best effort of 42-6.

Savannah Nelson punched the Trojans girls’ lone ticket to state by taking runner-up honors in the girls 200-meter dash. The top four all were within eight-tenths of a second at the end, but Nelson’s second-place time of 27.73 seconds was good enough to get her an invitation to the state meet.

LCC will have just one representative at state, as senior high jumper Jayden Reifenrath came away with a district title, winning the event with a best height of 6-1.

The state track meet will be held next Friday and Saturday, May 19-20, at Burke Stadium in Omaha. Reifenrath will participate in the high jump at 9 a.m. on Friday, Gardea will compete on Friday at 11 a.m., Peitz will compete in the triple jump on Friday at 12 p.m., and Nelson is scheduled to run in the preliminaries at 1:35 p.m. on Friday.
