Wakefield Seniors close season one win shy of C2 Area final
After grinding out two weekend elimination wins, #3 Wakefield Post 81 suffered a weeknight loss to end their summer campaign.
Back at Wisner River Park for a fourth consecutive day, Post 81 once again battled #2 Oakland during the Class C Area 2 Senior American Legion baseball tournament.
The July 28 outing favored Oakland winning 5-3. Wakefield ended their season at 10-14.
Post 81 started by scoring a run in the top of the first inning but followed by giving up three runs the next half inning. Oakland also scored twice in the bottom of the third as Wakefield plated single runs in the top of the fourth and sixth.
Jacob Birkley singled twice and scored as Turner Thompson singled and drove in a run.
Tanner Thompson singled and scored as Mason Lamprecht and Matthew Metzler both singled. Ruben Vega also scored.
Jesse Lundahl (96 pitches) suffered the complete game loss in six innings allowing five earned runs off six hits while striking out seven batters, walking three and hitting one.
Earlier in the Class C Area 2 Senior American Legion baseball tourney, Wakefield suffered a 5-2 loss to #2 Oakland on July 25 and also won 10-8 over #5 Tekamah-Herman on July 26 and also eliminated the host #4 Wisner-Pilger/Howells-Dodge 7-6 in walk-off fashion on July 27.
Wakefield Seniors bounce back with two weekend wins at C2 Area
It was a busy weekend for Wakefield Post 81 Senior American Legion baseball with Class C Area 2 Tournament action underway.
From Wisner City Park in Wisner, #3 Post 81 went 2-1 from July 25 - 27 to continue into Monday's elimination round.
Wakefield first suffered a 5-2 loss against #2 Oakland Post 46 on July 25 before picking up back-to-back wins of 10-8 over #5 Tekamah-Herman Post 15 on July 26 and 7-6 in walk-off fashion against the host #4 Wisner-Pilger/Howells-Dodge Post 85 on July 27.
Post 81 is now 10-13 on the season.
During the most recent July 27 victory, Wakefield led 4-1 entering the fifth before giving up single runs in the fifth and sixth as well as three runs in the seventh. Down 6-4, Post 81 produced their own three-run inning to win in walk-off fashion thanks to a single from Cael Johnson driving in Mason Lamprecht.
Lamprecht recorded a solo homerun and scored two total runs while Johnson singled twice and drove in two runs. Jesse Lundahl also singled twice and scored twice.
Turner Thompson (40 pitches) picked up the win in the final inning and a third allowing three runs off one hit while striking out one batter and walking four. Lamprecht (108) started the opening five and two-thirds allowing three runs (one earned) off five hits while striking out nine batters and hitting one.
In the July 26 win, Post 81 again jumped ahead early leading 8-0 entering the fourth. Tekamah-Herman rattled off seven unanswered runs before Post 81 would hold onto the 10-8 victory.
Lundahl posted a three-run homerun, doubled and drove in four total runs; Johnson singled three times and scored twice while Jacob Birkley also singled twice, drove in two runs and scored.
Ruben Vega singled, drove in a run and scored twice as Lamprecht scored twice.
Tanner Thompson (78 pitches) picked up the win in four innings allowing six runs (three earned) off eight hits while striking out five batters and walking four. Johnson (57) closed out the final three innings allowing two earned runs off two hits while striking out three batters and walking four.
From the opening round game on July 26, Post 81 scored their lone two runs of the game in the top of the seventh to fall short, 5-2 against Oakland.
Vega doubled and scored; Matthew Metzler doubled as Birkley and Lundahl both singled and drove in a run.
Lundahl (60 pitches) suffered the loss in three and two-thirds allowing three runs off two hits while striking out five batters and walking one. Lamprecht (45) worked two and a third innings allowing two runs while striking out two batters, walking two and hitting one.
On July 28, #3 Wakefield Post 81 ended with a 5-3 elimination game loss against #2 Oakland.
