Wakefield Post 81 suffers first C2 Area Tourney loss

A battle between a pair of 2-0 postseason tournament teams closed out day three of the Class C Area 2 Senior American Legion baseball tournament on Sunday.

From the David Nitzschke Memorial Field in Pender, #4 Wakefield Post 81 took on the host #1 Pender Post 55.

Pender used consistent scoring in the middle innings to win 11-4 over Wakefield. Post 81 fell to 13-14.

Pender began scoring with a run in the first inning. Following a scoreless second, Pender added three runs in the third and used a 4-1 advantage in the fourth to go up 8-1. Wakefield answered with a 3-2 fifth inning before Pender scored once more in the seventh to win 11-4. Pender outhit Wakefield, 15-6.

Cade Johnson, Jesse Lundahl and Jacob Birkley all singled and scored as Tanner Thompson doubled for Wakefield.

Ryan Anderson and Tate Salmon both singled as Johnny Birkley scored.

Lundahl (91 pitches) suffered the loss in four innings allowing eight runs (six earned) off 10 hits while striking out six batters and walking two. Jacob Birkley (50) worked the final three innings allowing three earned runs off five hits while striking out and walking one batter each.

Earlier in the day, #5 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells knocked out #6 Tekamah-Herman, 6-2.
