A dreary day outside was met with excitement indoors as a member of the Wakefield boys wrestling program took another step in his wrestling career.

Senior Ruben Vega will attend Southeast Community College located in Beatrice and signed with the Bobcat men's wrestling team.

Family and friends attended the signing day for Vega.

"It's nice to know that all the work I put in over the summer and over the time has finally paid off," said Vega. "It's been a dream to wrestle in college. It's really relieving to know what I'm doing right after high school season ends."

Vega has been in contact with the Southeast Community College coaching staff keeping them updated with highlights. He's also on pace to break some Trojan records along with surpassing 100 career wins.

"He (SCC head coach) invited me down and then I stayed for a dual and it was pretty cool," said Vega. "It's a great atmosphere and a really good campus."

Vega plans to pursue a criminal justice degree with the plan to become a State Trooper.

The Wakefield senior will start at the 165 weight class with the goal to drop to 157 for the remainder of the season.

He looks forward to wrestling with 'his group'.

"They're really fun to watch," said Vega. "We have a lot of new kids with a couple years under their belt. It's really entertaining watching them and I really feel like a lot of them will be successful this year."

Along with summer baseball, football and wrestling during his senior season, Vega will start up spring and summer wrestling tournaments to prepare for collegiate wrestling. He will also be focusing on a weight lifting program being sent by his college coaches.

He also plans to wrestle 157lb at Southeast Community College.

"It's just longer periods," said Vega. "Really got to get my conditioning up before I go to the college level. Right now its two, two, two I think and then it bumps up to three minutes (periods). Longer stamina is going to be needed."

Along with enjoying the sport he cherishes, focusing on his school work will be another benefit to allow him to jump into the workforce.

The dual season gets underway for the Wakefield boys on Dec. 4 hosting Pender starting at 7 p.m.
