Wakefield splits home doubleheader with Lyons-Decatur Northeast, Trojan boys pull away in second half

A pair of East Husker Conference basketball teams competed against one another during regular season play.

From the main gym in Wakefield, the Trojans entertained Lyons-Decatur Northeast on Tuesday.

The Wakefield girls suffered a 47-35 loss while the Wakefield boys won 56-34 against the visiting Cougars.

In the girls game, Lyons-Decatur Northeast held a 10-9 first quarter advantage before extending their lead thanks to a 16-11 second quarter to go up 26-20 at the break. Wakefield chipped away at the deficit with a 12-10 third quarter as the visiting Cougars won the fourth, 11-3. Final favored Lyons-Decatur Northeast winning 47-35 to improve to 6-9 as Wakefield fell to 2-12 dropping their fifth straight.

Wakefield leaders were sophomore Boston Brown with 14 points, junior Ashlyn Riewer added eight points as senior Alli Brown tallied seven points. Two-point scoring came from junior Gracyn Keagle, senior Isabella Andrade and sophomore Montse Avila.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast leaders were juniors Avery Bacon and Tavyanna Parker both with 17 points.

During the boys game, Lyons-Decatur Northeast held a 16-15 first quarter lead before Wakefield began to pull away thanks to a 15-10 second quarter to go up 30-26. The host Trojans outscored Lyons-Decatur Northeast 17-4 in the third and 9-4 in the fourth. Final favored Wakefield winning 56-34 (26-8 second half) to improve to 6-7 winning their third straight as the Cougars fell to 4-11 dropping their fifth straight.

Double figure Wakefield leaders were junior Cael Johnson with 18 points, as junior Jacob Birkley, junior Jacob Borg and senior Jesse Lundahl all scored 10 points.

Other scoring came from junior Benny Palma with six points as senior Tim Kaufman tacked on two points.

Lyons-Decatur Northeast was led by junior Eli Schlichting with nine points as sophomore Weston Hardeman tallied eight points.

The Wakefield girls and boys will next visit Tri County Northeast (co-op of Allen and Emerson-Hubbard) in Emerson on Friday, Jan. 24.
