A rescheduled northeast Nebraska high school basketball doubleheader opened the week among two East Husker Conference programs.
From the Wakefield main gym, the Trojans hosted Wisner-Pilger on Monday.
The Wakefield girls suffered a 52-29 loss while the Trojan boys picked up a 69-41 victory against the visiting Gators.
In the girls game, Wisner-Pilger built a 17-7 first quarter lead followed by a low-scoring second quarter of 4-1 in favor of the visiting Gators to lead 21-8 at the break. The Gators outscored Wakefield in the third, 14-12 and 17-9 in the fourth. Final favored Wisner-Pilger winning 52-29 to improve to 5-7 while the Trojans fell 2-9.
Wakefield was led in scoring by sophomore Boston Brown with 14 points on three made three’s as sophomore Montse Avila added nine points thanks to a trio of triples.
Other scoring came from junior Ashlyn Riewer with three points, senior Isabella Andrade tallied two points as senior Alli Brown scored a point.
The Trojans shot 2-3 from the foul line and made seven three’s.
Double figure Wisner-Pilger leaders were junior Emerson Bellar with 15 points, senior Haley Kneifl followed with 13 points as sophomore Ramsey Arduser added 12 points on four made three’s.
The Gators finished 3-8 at the charity stripe.
During the boys outing, Wakefield held a slight 13-10 first quarter lead followed by a 17-10 second quarter for the host Trojans to lead 30-20 at the break. Wakefield pulled away in the third quarter thanks to a 30-6 advantage as Wisner-Pilger won the fourth, 15-9. Final favored Wakefield winning 69-41 to improve to 4-7 as the visiting Gators fell to 2-9.
Wakefield leaders were junior Jacob Birkley with 23 points on five made three-pointers, junior Cael Johnson added 17 points as junior Brandon Paredes followed with 12 points on four made three’s.
Other scoring came from junior Jacob Borg with seven points, junior Benny Palma tacked on five points, senior Jesse Lundahl tallied four points as senior Timothy Kaufman scored a point.
The Trojans made 11 three’s and shot 8-13 from the foul line.
Wisner-Pilger was led in scoring by junior Regan Raabe with 24 points going 4-5 from the foul line.
The Gators finished 4-8 from the charity stripe.
