Wakefield Trojan week three fall sports recap: XC, volleyball, football

Members of the Wakefield cross country program competed in week-day action.

From Cedarview Country Club on Sept. 10, the Wakefield girls finished fifth with 46 points while the Trojan boys took third with 44 points.

In the girls division, Jamie Lopez was the top Wakefield finisher in 16th (24:22.31) followed by Jennifer Hernandez (22nd - 25:51.37).

During the boys competition, Colt Johnson brought home a fourth place medal (18:04.88) for the Trojans.

 

Several different class levels were represented during the Wakefield Invite as the host Trojans dropped five matches.

From the Main and Auxiliary gyms, Wakefield first suffered a 2-0 loss against Pierce (10-25, 10-25) and also were swept by Ponca (21-25, 15-25) on Sept. 10.

Two days later, the Trojans lost in straight sets against Cedar Catholic (11-25, 15-25), St. Mary's (15-25, 12-25) and Lyons-Decatur Northeast (15-25, 17-25).

From Sept. 15 action, Wakefield dropped a 3-0 decision at Howells-Dodge (17-25, 6-25, 10-25) falling to 1-13.

Five-match leaders from the Wakefield Invite came from Quinn Riewer with 18 kills, 24 digs, two aces and two solo blocks followed by Emerson Mackling with 12 kills, 23 digs and five blocks.

Molly Schlickbernd totaled 46 assists, 18 digs and two aces.

 

For the second straight week, Wakefield was unable to score as a pair of Class D1 Nebraska high school football programs competed on the gridiron.

From Gardner Stadium, the host Trojans dropped a 47-0 decision to West Holt on Sept. 11.

Wakefield fell to 1-2 as the Huskies improved to 3-0.

Matthew Metzler completed 8-of-10 for 50 yards. He also ran the rock 16 times for 48 yards.

Mark Reyes (one tackle for loss) and Metzler (0.5 TFL) both recorded six tackles (three solo).
