Wakefield, Winside head to Summerland Tourney Dec. 27 – 28

Two area high school basketball teams will be competing in a new holiday tourney to close out the 2024 portion of their season.

From Summerland Public School in Ewing, both Wakefield and Winside will join Ainsworth and the host Summerland on Friday, Dec. 27 and Saturday, Dec. 28 for a pair of games each day.

Wakefield previously competed in the Shootout on the Elkhorn hosted by Wisner-Pilger while Winside has been competing at the Randolph Holiday Tournament in year’s past.

Friday’s schedule will open with the Class C1 Wakefield girls (0-6) taking on Class C2 Ainsworth (1-5) at 3 p.m. followed by Class C2 Wakefield boys (2-4) vs. Class D1 Ainsworth (0-5) at 4:30 p.m.

The night games will showcase Class D2 Winside girls (2-3) taking on the host Class C2 Summerland (2-5) at 6 p.m. followed by Class D2 Winside boys (1-4) vs. Class C2 Summerland (6-0).

Last year, the Wakefield girls went 2-0 to win the Shootout on the Elkhorn while Winside went 0-2 during the Randolph Holiday Tournament.

The Ainsworth girls defeated Summerland 65-56 in the finals last year in Ewing.

Last year, the Wakefield boys went 1-1 to finish runner-up during the Shootout on the Elkhorn while Winside went 1-1 to finish third during the Randolph Holiday Tournament.

The Ainsworth boys won 58-55 over Summerland in the finals last year in Ewing.

Consolation games are scheduled for 3/4:30 p.m. along with the finals at 6/7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
