Wakefield, Winside track & field battles through Thursday weather conditions

Several Nebraska high school track & field teams competed in the rain during a weekday invite which included both Wakefield and Winside.

From Pierce, 11 girls and 12 boys teams made up the Tom Martin Wausa Invite on Thursday.

The Wakefield girls finished 10th with 13 points while the Wakefield boys took eighth with 27 points as the Winside girls totaled 17 points good for ninth and the Winside boys tied for 11th with six points.

In the girls division, Pierce won the Tom Martin Wausa Invite with 116 points, Norfolk Catholic followed in second (69), Stanton took third (67), Wausa placed fourth (51) and Cedar Catholic rounded out the top five teams with 47 points.

The Wakefield girls were led by a gold medal from sophomore Brown Brown in the triple jump (34′ 3 3/4″). She also took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (50.03).

In relays, the 4×100 of sophomore Montse Avila, junior Ashlyn Riewer, junior Gracyn Keagle and senior Alli Brown placed sixth (55.13).

The Winside girls top results came from sophomore Katelyn Jaeger with a bronze medal in the 3200-meter run (14:02.94) while sophomore Hadleigh Schutt took fourth in both the shot put (34′ 5″) and discus (98′),

Freshman Bridget Marotz placed sixth in the high jump (4′ 4″).

In relays, the 4×800 of sophomore Adrianna Miller, Katelyn Jaeger, sophomore Aleah Bilstein and sophomore Hadley Sellin placed fifth (12:00.28).

During the boys division, Pierce won the Tom Martin Wausa Invite in Pierce with 90 points, Cedar Catholic was two points back in second (88), Stanton took third (72), Norfolk Catholic placed fourth (59) and Summerland rounded out the top five teams with 44 points.

The Wakefield boys were led by junior Cael Johnson in second during the 200-meter dash (23.63) along with a runner-up finish from senior Jesse Lundahl in the discus (145′ 2″).

Junior Benny Palma placed sixth during the 3200-meter run (11:24.23).

In relays, the 4×400 of Lundahl, junior Jacob Borg, junior Mason Lamprecht and Johnson took second (3:39.41) and the 4×100 of Borg, Johnson, junior Brandon Parades and Lamprecht finished fifth (45.89).

Winside boys scoring came from junior Caleb Offner placing third at 48′ 7″ during the shot put.
