Both Wayne and Wakefield were in action during day one of the 2024 Jean Groth Volleyball Classic in separate pools.
From Wisner-Pilger High School, Wayne High competed in Wisner 2 while the Trojans took part in Wisner 1 on Thursday.
The Blue Devils won both sets against Lutheran High Northeast (25-21, 25-17) but dropped a three-set match with Oakland-Craig (23-25, 25-21, 25-23). Wayne High is now 2-2 on the season.
Head Wayne High volleyball coach Nichelle Daum said, “it was a tough fought game (against Oakland-Craig). Not the outcome we obviously wanted, but that cannot take away from the strides that this team is making. Each game showed all around improvement from each position and showed how strong these girls are together.
Oakland-Craig also won in three sets over Lutheran High Northeast (25-18, 22-25, 25-15).
In the victory over Lutheran High Northeast, junior Elle Powicki posted a team-high seven kills and nine digs to go along with one block. Sophomore Mallory Redden recorded 21 assists, six digs and one solo block.
Senior Amelia Legler added six kills and two solo blocks; junior Haley Kramer tallied four kills, eight digs and one block; sophomore Alexis Legler finished with three kills and two blocks as junior Megan Magnuson (two digs), freshman Kamden Dobbins and sophomore Naomi Lipp (one dig) all had a kill. Junior Jacen Hasemann also had seven digs as sophomore Addison Frank tacked on four digs.
Kramer, Frank and Powicki all had a service.
From the loss against Oakland-Craig, Alexis Legler led Wayne with eight kills and two blocks; Redden posted a team-high 22 assists while totaling five digs, three kills and two blocks (one solo) as Frank led the team in digs with eight to go along with one kill.
Kramer followed with six kills and seven digs; Powicki had five kills and four digs; Amelia Legler tallied four kills, four digs and five blocks; Magnuson tacked on three kills and six blocks as Hasemann also had six digs.
Kramer finished with three services aces while Redden added an ace.

During the Wisner 1 pool, the Wakefield volleyball team suffered a two set loss against the host Wisner-Pilger (21-25, 15-25) and also lost in straight sets against Bancroft-Rosalie (25-27, 18-25). Wakefield is now 0-4 on the season.
Wisner-Pilger also swept Bancroft-Rosalie (25-21, 25-15).
From the loss against the Gators, senior Alli Brown posted a team-high 10 kills, five digs and one block. Sophomore Boston Brown finished with a team-high 10 assists to go along with two kills and four digs as junior Ashlyn Riewer led the Trojans with 16 digs.
Sophomore Montserratt Avila added four kills and three digs; junior Sierra Kaufman had two kills and one dig; junior Gracyn Keagle tacked on a kill, one dig and two blocks (one solo) as senior Isabella Andrade tallied six digs.
Andrade and Keagle both had a service ace.
During the loss with Bancroft-Rosalie, Alli Brown had 10 kills and nine digs; Boston Brown finished with eight assists and three digs as Riewer tacked on nine digs.
Kaufman added six kills and a dig; Keagle had two kills, one dig and a block as Andrade closed with a kill and four digs. Avila also had three digs as freshman Rihanna Rivera tallied a dig.
Service aces came from Boston Brown with two as Andrade had an ace.

An early season high school volleyball tournament showcased weekend matches for a total of 12 teams.
Jean Groth Volleyball Classic matches were played at both Wisner-Pilger (Gold/Silver) and Pender (Bronze).
Wayne High went 1-1 last Thursday to qualify for the Silver Division while Wakefield went 0-2 in pool play to earn a spot in the Bronze bracket.
From Wisner-Pilger during the Silver Division, Wayne High swept West Point-Beemer (25-20, 25-19), swept Bancroft-Rosalie (25-9, 25-16) and won a three-set match over GACC (16-25, 25-17, 25-19). The Blue Devils are now 5-2 on the season.
In the victory over West Point-Beemer, junior Haley Kramer posted a team-high nine kills and seven digs; sophomore Addison Frank led the team team in digs with 12 as sophomore Mallory Redden finished with 29 assists, four digs and one kill.
Junior Elle Powicki added six kills and six digs; sophomore Alexis Legler (one solo block/two digs) and senior Amelia Legler (two blocks/one solo/four digs) both tallied five kills as junior Megan Magnuson tacked on four kills, one dig and a block. Other digs came from junior Jacen Hasemann (11).
Powicki and Hasemann both had two service aces as Redden finished with an ace.
During the win against Bancroft-Rosalie, freshman Kamden Dobbins led Wayne with five kills; Kramer led the team in digs with seven to go along with three kills and a block as Redden posted a team-high 15 assists, three digs and one kill.
Powicki (four digs) and Magnuson (three digs/one block) both followed with three kills; Amelia Legler tallied two kills, two digs and two blocks (one solo) as sophomore Naomi Lipp tacked on one kill. Alexis Legler had one block and three digs while other digs came from Hasemann (six) and sophomore Addison Frank (two).
Hasemann recorded three service aces as Kramer had an ace.
From the victory with GACC, Kramer posted a double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs and one solo block while Powicki added a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs and one block. Redden recorded 29 assists, nine digs, one block and one kill.
Alexis Legler followed with three kills and two blocks; Amelia Legler tallied two kills, two blocks (one solo) and one dig as Magnuson had one kill and one block. Other digs came from Frank (13) and Hasemann (eight).
Redden also had three service aces.
The Wayne High volleyball team will next visit Logan View/Scribner-Snyder on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. for the varsity match.

During the Bronze Bracket, Wakefield began with a win in three sets over Pender (25-10, 10-25, 25-10), won in three sets over Lutheran High Northeast (11-25, 25-21, 25-16) but suffered a loss in straight sets against Tekamah-Herman (13-25, 25-27). The Trojans are now 2-5 on the season.
In the win over Pender, senior Alli Brown posted a team-high 13 kills, eight digs and two blocks; junior Ashlyn Riewer led the team in digs with 14 to go along with three assists as sophomore Montserratt Avila finished with eight assists, eight digs and eight kills.
Junior Sierra Kaufman followed with five kills; junior Gracyn Keagle had six digs, two kills and two blocks (one solo); freshman Rihanna Rivera totaled a kill as senior Isabella Andrade tacked on five digs.

Alli Brown led the team with five service aces, followed by Boston Brown with four aces as Andrade, Keagle, Riewer and Avila all had an ace.
From the loss with Tekamah-Herman, Alli Brown finished with a team-high five kills, five digs and two blocks; Boston Brown (three kills/four assists) and Andrade both tied for the team lead in digs with six as Avila posted a team-high eight assists to go along with three kills, three digs and a block.
Keagle tacked on two kills and a block; Kaufman (two blocks/five digs) and Rivera (one dig) both had a kill as Riewer totaled four digs and two assists.

Wakefield was to host Madison on Tuesday, Sept. 10 before hosting the Wakefield Invite on Thursday and Saturday (Sept. 12 and 14).

Wayne High swept West Point-Beemer (25-20, 25-19).
Wayne swept Bancroft-Rosalie (25-9, 25-16).
Wayne won a three-set match over GACC (16-25, 25-17, 25-19).
