Wayne allows eight straight runs

After having a couple of road games moved to Wayne and another road outing postponed from last week, Tuesday marked the first official road outing of the season for WHS.

From Fort Calhoun, Wayne met up with the Pioneers during a Class C regular season showdown.

The Blue Devils had an opportunity to open the game up with the bases loaded in the top of the first and were limited to one run. Fort Calhoun then scored eight straight to win 8-3. Wayne High suffered their first loss of the season falling to 2-1 as the Pioneers began their year at 1-0.

WHS scored one run in the top of the first when senior Alex Rodriguez drove in sophomore Adrian Contreras.

Fort Calhoun would quickly tie the game up the next half inning.

Following a scoreless second, the host Pioneers would plate two runs in each of the third and fourth innings to go up 5-1. Fort Calhoun closed with a run in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth.

Wayne’s late rally fell short scoring twice in the top of the seventh. Sophomore William Patefield drove in senior Gavin Redden as Rodriguez crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Final favored Fort Calhoun winning 8-3 despite Wayne winning the hit department, 7-6. Both teams committed three errors.

Adrian Contreras recorded three hits, including one double with one run scored as Alex Rodriguez singled, drove in a run and scored.

William Patefield singled and drove in a run as Gavin Redden singled and scored. Junior Brodey Munter also singled.

Contreras (83 pitches) suffered the loss in four innings allowing five runs (three earned) off five hits while striking out five batters, walking three and hitting one. Senior Brayden Rajaee-Hallgren (50) worked the final two innings allowing three runs (two earned) off one hit while striking out two batters, walking one and hitting two.

The Wayne High baseball team will next host Pender on Thursday before traveling to Malcolm on Friday for a triangular.
