Wayne blanks South Sioux City in five innings with Kneifl on mound, secures one-run victory over Crete behind complete game by Redden

Along with changes to the game structure and location for weekday Wayne High baseball, home competition moved to the campus of Wayne State College.

From the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex, the Class C Blue Devils first opened against Class A South Sioux City followed by a single game with Class B Crete.

Wayne High started with an 11-0 win over South Sioux City before picking up a 3-2 victory against Crete. Wayne High is now 6-3 on the season and is on a four-game winning streak.

SSC moved to 2-3 and Crete fell to 6-5.

The South Sioux City vs. Crete game was called off due to field availability for the Wayne State College baseball team.

In the victory over the Class A Cardinals of SSC, scoring occurred early and often thanks to a four-run bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Adrian Contreras started the inning by scoring on a passed ball, senior Alex Rodriguez drove in sophomore Jaxson Kneifl scoring on an error, senior Gavin Redden then scored on a passed ball before ending with a RBI groundout from senior Calvin Ankeny scoring Rodriguez.

The Blue Devils followed with three more runs in the second. Senior Brayden Rajaee-Hallgren crossed the plate on a passed ball followed by Rodriguez using a two-RBI base hit scoring Kneifl and Redden.

Following a scoreless third, WHS brought in four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to win by run-rule. Redden first drove in Contreras, Kneifl scored on a passed ball, sophomore William Patefield added a RBI groundout scoring Redden while junior Drew Reinhardt drove in Ankeny.

Final favored Wayne winning 11-0 and outhitting South Sioux City, 7-1. The Blue Devils committed one error compared to four errors by SSC.

Alex Rodriguez singled, drove in three runs and scored; Drew Reinhardt singled twice and drove in a run as Jaxson Kneifl doubled and scored three times. Gavin Redden also singled, drove in a run and scored three times.

Adrian Contreras singled and scored twice; Calvin Ankeny singled, drove in a run and scored; William Patefield accounted for a RBI as Brayden Rajaee-Hallgren scored.

Jaxson Kneifl (65 pitches) picked up the complete game shutout victory in five innings allowing one hit while striking out four batters and hitting one.

During the win against the Class B Cardinals from Crete, it was the visitors plating a single run in the top of the first inning.

Following back-to-back scoreless innings, Wayne started a rally with two runs in the home half of the fourth. Calvin Ankeny reached on an error scoring Gavin Redden followed by Drew Reinhardt driving in Ankeny.

The Blue Devils added one more run in the fifth to lead 3-1 thanks to a RBI base hit by Alex Rodriguez driving in Contreras.

After no runs crossed the plate in the sixth, Crete was held to one run in the top of the seventh.

Final favored Wayne holding onto the 3-2 victory despite being outhit, 7-5. The Blue Devils committed two errors compared to one by the Cardinals.

Alex Rodriguez and Drew Reinhardt both singled and drove in a run as Adrian Contreras singled and scored.

Jaxson Kneifl and junior Brodey Munter both singled as Gavin Redden and Calvin Ankeny both scored.

Redden (85 pitches) picked up the complete game victory in seven innings allowing two earned runs off seven hits while striking out three batters and walking one.
