Wayne boys survive first round scare, rematch with Cedar Catholic in conference semis on Friday

Tuesday showcased two locations with four Mid State Conference basketball boys games taking over.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, Wayne hosted the opening game against Guardian Angels Central Catholic (West Point) followed by Cedar Catholic vs. O’Neill.

Wayne High held onto win 45-41 over the visiting Bluejays to improve to 17-2 winning their fourth straight. GACC fell to 4-13.

Later in the evening, Cedar Catholic secured a 66-52 victory over O’Neill to move to 14-5 marking their fourth straight victory.

Winner’s bracket games will be played in Hartington (Cedar Catholic HS) on Friday, Feb. 7. Wayne will open the night at 6 p.m. against the Trojans in a rematch from January 24 in Wayne where the Blue Devils won 55-38.

The other half of the bracket in Ponca favored the host Ponca winning 40-33 over Battle Creek while Boone Central won 58-47 against Norfolk Catholic.

Ponca and Boone Central will play the second winner’s bracket game on Friday.

In the loser’s bracket from Albion, Pierce will open against Crofton at 4:30 p.m., followed by GACC vs. O’Neill and close with Battle Creek vs. Norfolk Catholic.

Championship Saturday will be back at Cedar Catholic starting with the boys fifth place game at 11:45 a.m., third place game around 3:15 p.m. and finals around 7 p.m.
