The Wayne boys track and field team finished third while the girls were fifth in Thursday’s Fred Arnold Invitational at Schuyler High School.
The Wayne boys came away with three event wins on the day, led by senior Mason Lee’s wins in the triple jump (41-1 1/2) and long jump (20-10 1/4). Jack Evetovich also claimed first place in the high jump winning with a leap of 6-3.
Other boys medalists included Mike Leatherdale placing third in the shot put, Aaron Reynolds took fifth in the 400-meter run and Alex Echtenkamp placed sixth in the triple jump. Wayne’s three relays all medaled, with the 400-meter relay team of Leatherdale, Echtenkamp, Tristen Landanger and Casey Koenig finishing fifth; the 1,600 relay of Reynolds, Landanger, Koenig and
Tyrus Eischeid was sixth; and the 3,200 tandem of Eischeid, Brandon Wacker, Isaac Cliff and Reece Jaqua also finished sixth.
In girls action, Masyn Dorey was the high finisher for the Blue Devils, placing third in the pole vault at 9 feet. Skylar Mutchler and Sidney Biggerstaff finished fifth in the discus and 100-meter hurdles, respectively, while Andrea Torres was fifth in the 3,200 and Erin O’Reilly placed sixth in the 300 hurdles.
Wayne’s 400 and 3,200 relays both finished fourth. The sprint relay included O’Reilly, Dorey, Hailey Backer and Ashton Boyer, while the distance foursome was Torres, Molly Hoskins, Sarah Greenwald and Frankie Klausen.
Several Wayne High athletes are expected to compete in the Northeast Nebraska Track and Field Classic on Thursday in Norfolk. Both Wayne teams will next be in action at the Mid State Conference meet on Saturday, April 28 in Hartington.
