Wayne City Council approves smaller electric rate increase

Posted

After considerable debate during Monday's Wayne City Council meeting, action was taken to raise electric rates for electric users in the city.

Following a rate study by JEO Consulting, which recommended a rate increase of 11%, council members discussed possible options and arrived at a 6-1 decision (Woehler in descent) to raise rates 6.5% beginning with the October 2026 bill, which will reflect usage from mid-August to mid-Septemer.

An additional 6.5% rate increase will  take effect in October of 2027.

The 6.5% increase in each of the next two years was brought forth by Council member Austyn Houser, who said that because a rate increase hadn't taken place in several years, "we are having to play catch-up."

The council will evaluate the rates again after the city switches to being its own market participant in the purchase of electricity within the Southwest Power Pool. This will take effect Jan. 1, 2027.
