Wayne County Sheriff's Office responds to fatality accident


The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle traffic collision at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Feb. 22.

The accident occurred approximately four miles south of Winside, on Highway 35.  

A southbound vehicle collided with a northbound vehicle resulting in disabling damage to both vehicles. The accident caused the highway to be closed for a brief period of time.  

One driver was transported to a medical facility for treatment of his injuries and was released.  The other driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Weather conditions and lack of seat belt usage were considered factors in the fatality. 

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Winside Volunteer Department, the Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

The collision remains under investigation.
