After being in three different pools over a six-day period, the Wayne Dolphins hosted their invite on June 21.
Wayne Dolphins control home meet, top scorers recorded
It was a jam packed morning into the afternoon for the Wayne Dolphins during their annual home invitational on June 21.
From the Wayne Aquatic Center at the Wayne Community Activity Center, the Wayne Dolphins had 43 athletes in action.
In the combined team race, the Wayne Dolphins swam away from the field with 643 points well ahead of Blair Summer Swim in second (361.5) and West Point Dolphins in third (346).
Hartington took fourth (345) and Fremont Area Swim Team rounded out the top five teams (118).
In the women's division, the Wayne Dolphins were led by Emily Gilliland with 46 points to lead all swimmers followed by Clara Ankeny with 39 points.
Emily Gilliland (girls 13-14) won the 100m individual medley (1:22.92), 50m backstroke (38.45), 50 breaststroke (43.42) and 50m freestyle (32.63).
She was also on winning mixed relays during the 200m medley performing the freestyle with Kendall Klein (backstroke), Brinley Cliff (breaststroke) and Alyssa Bargholz (butterfly) in 2:40.55 along with the 200m freestyle with Penelope Zavada-Cupp, Cliff and Bargholz during a time of 2:21.26.
Clara Ankeny (women's 15-18) won the 50m breaststroke (44.17) and 50m freestyle (33.48) along with runner-up times in the 100m individual medley (1:26.73) and 50m butterfly (36.39).
She was also on the winning mixed relay during the 200m medley performing the freestyle with Hallie Heithold (backstroke), Cole Zach (breaststroke) and Colton Sebade (butterfly) during a time of 2:33.28.
During the men's division, the Wayne Dolphins were led by Cole Zach scoring 45.5 points (0.5 point behind Gilliland) as Benjamin Patefield followed with the second-most points for the boys (31).
Cole Zach (men's 15-18) won the 100m individual medley (1:14.53), 50m backstroke (35.67), 50m breastroke (39.26) and 50m freestyle (29.72).
He was also on the winning mixed relay during the 200m medley (noted previously with Clara Ankeny) and took second on the mixed 200m freestyle relay team of Dean Young, Haley Brogren and Elsie Gilliland in a time of 2:17.67 by 0.5 seconds.
Benjamin Patefield (boys 13-14) placed runner-up in the 50m backstroke (48.56) and 50m breaststroke (44.51); third in the 100m individual medley (1:39.48) and fourth during the 50m freestyle (40.01).
He was also on two runner-up mixed relays during the 200m medley relay performing the breaststroke with Sarah Kuchta (backstroke), Penelope Zavada-Cupp (butterfly) and Alex Ziska (freestyle) in a time of 2:52.77 as well as the 200m freestyle with Taylor Klein, Daniel Kuchta and Alex Ziska in 2:38.94.
The Wayne Dolphins will next compete in the West Point #2 Swim Invite on Saturday, June 28 starting at 10 a.m. before also traveling to the Wahoo Invite on Tuesday, July 1.
Lennox Smith tabbed Swimmer of the Week
Each week, Wayne Dolphins head coach Jaden Todd selects a 'Swimmer of the Week'.
Following the Saturday, June 21 home Wayne Invite from the Wayne Aquatic Center at the Community Activity Center, coach Todd awarded Lennox Smith as the recipient.
Coach Jaden Todd said, “Lennox out performed at the Wayne home swim meet this past weekend. Every event I could tell she was giving it her all. She caught up, passed, and/or out reached all of her competitors with nothing but the will to win and it showed with all of her first place ribbons. Great job Lennox, keep it up.”
The Wayne Dolphins won the combined team race with 643 points over the Blair Summer Swim team (361.5).
Lennox Smith (girls 9-10) helped the Wayne Dolphins by scoring tied for the fifth-most points with 32.5.
Smith won the 100m individual medley (1:51.84) and 25m backstroke (22.62); took second in the 25m butterfly (22.23) and eighth in the 25m freestyle (24.31).
She was also on two mixed relays finishing runner-up during the 100m freestyle with Thomas Plager, Elizabeth Kuchta and Maximillian Ronhovde in a time of 1:26.94 and a third place finish during the 100m medley performing the freestyle with Elizabeth Kuchta (backstroke), Hayes Broders (breaststroke) and Thomas Plager (butterfly) in 1:50.97.
The Wayne Dolphins will next compete in the West Point #2 Swim Invite on Saturday, June 28 starting at 10 a.m. before also traveling to the Wahoo Invite on Tuesday, July 1.
