Wayne drops first game in state tournament

PIERCE — Plattsmouth Haswell Construction scored three in the first and rode the one-hit pitching of Gabe Villamonte to a 4-0 win over Wayne American Legion Post 43 in the winners bracket final of the Class B American Legion Seniors state tournament at Legion Field.

Plattsmouth used two hit batters and an error to score three unearned runs in the first inning, then added another in the fourth. Kaleb Moormeier, who got off to the rough start, pitched well after that, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five in a 94-pitch complete-game effort.

But Villamonte was in the zone on the bump for the Plattsmouth nine. He struck out six and gave up only a first-inning single to Wyatt Heikes and a free base to Jase Dean, who was hit by a pitch to start the sixth inning.

The loss puts Wayne (25-9) in a must-win situation on Tuesday, where they will face Wahoo in a 4:30 p.m. matchup. Plattsmouth plays Springfield at 7 p.m. If Springfield wins, they will face the Wahoo-Wayne winner Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., with the winner facing Plattsmouth 30 minutes after that matchup.

If Plattsmouth wins Tuesday’s game against Springfield, the Wahoo-Wayne winner will have to beat Plattsmouth twice to win the state title.
