Wayne eighth grade girls finish runner-up during season-opening tournament

Another Wayne Junior High sport began over the weekend with girls basketball taking part in a road tournament.

From Humphrey, the Wayne Junior High girls basketball team competed in an eighth-grade tourney on Saturday.

Wayne eighth grade girls won their first game 26-23 over Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family before falling 29-25 to Battle Creek in game two.

In the win, Lilly Redden paced the Wayne eighth grade girls in scoring with eight points followed by Tayla Hurner with six points. Other scoring came from Hannah Hank (four), Elizabeth Hix and Reagan Heithold (three each) as well as Lainey Meyer (two).

During the loss, Hurner poured in 11 points while Hank added six points. Both Redden and Heithold scored four points.

The Wayne Junior High girls basketball team will next visit Cedar Catholic on Tuesday, Dec. 3 starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Wayne Junior High boys basketball season will begin on Jan. 18.
