The Wayne High baseball team dropped its opener in the Class C Nebraska State Baseball Championships Saturday with a 7-1 loss to Central City/Fullerton/Centura at UNO's Tal Anderson Field.

Wayne left a runner in scoring position in the second and the Kernels answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning before breaking the game open with a five-run third inning, using four hits, two bases-loaded walks and a hit batter to put up the big inning.

Wayne was able to avoid the shutout with a run in the top of the seventh, as Kaden Keller was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a Kernel error.

Devin Anderson led Wayne's five-hit attack with a pair of singles. Brooks Kneifl was the losing pitcher.

Wayne (14-8) faces Plattsmouth in a 1 p.m. elimination game Monday at Fricke Field in Papillion.
