In addition to serving pancakes and omelets at the fire department's Firemen's Breakfast, members of the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department responded to two fires on Sunday (Sept. 28).
The first was shortly after 1:30 p.m. for a tractor that was on fire south of Wayne.
Fire Chief Phil Monahan said there was an electrical fire under cab. The tractor was damaged, but not considered a total loss.
Shortly before 7 p.m. the department was called to combine fire eight miles south and two miles east of Wayne.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the combine fully engulfed in flames. They were, however, able to save the grain head on the combine.
Monahan said that he estimates less than one-half acre of soybeans was lost in the blaze. At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined.
Firefighters remained on scene until approximately 9:30 p.m.
With this week's forecast calling for above normal temperatures and low humidities, area producers are encouraged to take precautions to prevent fires as harvest ramps up.
