Several underclassmen from the Wayne High girls and boys track & field teams were given the opportunity to perform amongst their peers.
Seven teams made up the Pierce Fr/So Invite on Tuesday with six being from the Mid State Conference ahead of weekend competition.
The Wayne girls finished seventh with 13 points while the Blue Devil boys took fourth with 60 points.
In the girls division, Norfolk won the Pierce Invite with 97 points, Battle Creek followed in runner-up (84), Norfolk Catholic took third (83), Boone Central placed fourth (82) and Pierce rounded out the top five teams with 69.5 points.
Sophomore Addison Frank posted the top finish for the Wayne girls winning the pole vault (8′ 9″).
Freshman Karla Wynia finished fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:11.73) as freshman Courtney Roeber took sixth in the triple jump (26′ 5″).
During the boys division, Norfolk won the Pierce Invite with 113 points, Pierce followed in runner-up (95.5), O’Neill took third (85), Wayne placed fourth (60) and Norfolk Catholic rounded out the top five teams with 49.5 points. *There was one event missing from team scoring on results as of Wednesday morning.
The Wayne boys were led by event champions of freshman Angel Vargas Brizuela during the 110-meter hurdles (16.52), sophomore Cole Zach in the 100-meter dash (11.65) and sophomore Landen Claussen during the 1600-meter run (5:18).
Vargas Brizuela took second in the 300-meter hurdles (43.84) and sophomore Konnor Kai finished second in the triple jump (37′ 1/4″).
Sophomore Lance Brink placed fourth in the 1600-meter run (5:27.07), Zach collected a fourth place medal during the high jump (5′ 6″) and sophomore Julian Garcia Morales finished sixth in the 800-meter run (2:32.96).
In relays, the 4×800 of sophomore Camden Hall, Brink, Claussen and freshman Grady Maas finished second (9:27.36), the 4×100 of Vargas Brizuela, freshman Carter Mostek, Kai and sophomore Gabriel Armstrong placed fourth (47.61) and the 4×400 of Hall, freshman Kyler Parker, freshman Denzel Ibarra and freshman Trecyn Ocampo placed sixth (4:07.33).
The Wayne High girls and boys varsity track & field program will return to action on Saturday, May 3 during the Mid State Conference Championships hosted by O’Neill.
