Wayne girls advance to C1-5 subdistrict semifinal, make 22 of 32 at the foul line

A combined 60 foul shots were attempted Monday night to open the Class C1-5 Subdistrict play-in game with a location change to be a home game for the Wayne High girls.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, #4 Wayne hosted #5 Winnebago in a game that was originally scheduled to be played in Arlington. The game was moved due to Arlington not able to host and travel conditions.

Besides from an even scoring second, the Wayne girls would hit timely shots to secure a 57-40 victory in postseason play.

Wayne jumped ahead 13-5 in the first quarter followed by Winnebago going on a 6-0 run to start the second to get as close at 13-11 with Wayne leading. Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter where Wayne would hold a 25-17 first half lead. In the third, the Blue Devils would build their lead to double figures thanks to a 13-8 third quarter while also winning the fourth, 19-15. Final favored Wayne winning 57-40 to improve to 12-13 winning back-to-back while the Indians had a four-game winning streak snapped ending their season at 11-15.

Wayne High leaders were junior Haley Kramer with 20 points on 5-6 shooting from the foul line followed by junior Reagan McGuire going 9-12 from the charity stripe for all of her points.

Other scoring came from sophomore Addison Frank with eight points (two made three’s),  junior Claire Lutter followed with six points, five-point scoring was posted by junior Elle Powicki and sophomore Lily Gubbels as junior Lilyan Hurner and sophomore Mallory Redden both scored two points.

Wayne shot 22-32 from the foul line.

Winnebago leaders were sophomore Jolon Blackbird with 13 points (9-12 FT) and sophomore Gianna Grant with 12 points.

The Indians finished 16-28 at the charity stripe.
