Wayne girls, boys move to winner’s bracket during home tourney

Normally the last games of day one showcased the host Wayne teams, but this year marked the early Friday evening session for the Blue Devils during the 2024 Elkhorn Valley Bank & Trust Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout.

From Rice Auditorium, Wayne High competed against Winnebago with the opportunity to advance in the winner’s bracket.

The Wayne High girls picked up a 66-32 victory while the Blue Devil boys won 59-43 against Winnebago.

In the girls outing, Wayne held a slight 17-16 lead following the first quarter before using a 20-5 advantage in the second to go up 37-21 at the break. The Blue Devils outscored Winnebago in the third, 15-3 and then 14-8 in the fourth. Final favored Wayne High winning 66-32 to improve to 3-4 as Winnebago fell to 1-6.

Wayne High leaders were junior Haley Kramer with 19 points, sophomore Alexis Legler followed with 14 points as sophomore Addison Frank added 12 points.

Other scoring came from juniors Claire Lutter and Reagan McGuire both with seven points, junior Elle Powicki tallied five points as junior Lilyan Hurner scored two points.

The Blue Devils finished 15-29 from the foul line.

Winnebago was led by senior Charlize Frenchman with 17 points on five made three’s.

The Indians shot 2-7 at the charity stripe.

During the boys outing, Wayne High led 12-9 after the opening quarter before outscoring the Indians, 17-9 in the second to go up 29-18 at the break. The Blue Devils added to their lead with a 16-14 third and closed the fourth on a 14-11 advantage. Final favored Wayne winning 59-43 to improve to 6-0 as Winnebago fell to 2-3.

Wayne High leaders were senior Colson Nelsen with 19 points, junior Jace Jorgensen added 15 points as senior Gavin Redden followed with 12 points.

Other scoring came from senior Kaden Keller with seven points, sophomore Jaxson Kneifl tallied four points as junior Brodey Munter scored two points.

The Blue Devils finished 17-25 (10-12 in the fourth) from the foul line.

Winnebago was led by senior Kellen Medina with 14 points.

The Indians shot 1-2 at the charity stripe.
