The Wayne High girls basketball team have had a rough week, but managed to come away with a 42-35 win at Arlington in their regular-season finale on Friday.
The Blue Devils have been battling the flu bug this week, but put together a solid game to win their 17th game of the year, tying a school record for wins in a season.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, baskets by Frankie Klausen and Jamie Gamble helped spark a 7-0 run that gave Wayne a 24-14 lead in the second quarter.
Arlington cut the deficit to three at the half, but after trading baskets to open the third, Wayne held Arlington scoreless, forcing four turnovers and nine missed shots, and got a 3-pointer from Klausen and baskets by Morgan Keating and Lindy Sandoz to take a 33-23 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Wayne built the lead to as many as 13 thanks to three Kylie Hammer baskets, and free throws by Klausen and Jenna Trenhaile helped close the game out.
Hammer scored a game-high 19 points for the 17-6 Blue Devils. Klausen pitched in eight points, Keating had six, Gamble scored four, Sandoz and Allison Echtenkamp each had two and Trenhaile scored one.
In boys action, Wayne fell to 15-6 on the season with a 71-42 loss to the Eagles in Arlington.
Wayne got out to an early lead and the two teams traded the lead before Will Anderson tied the game at 13-13 with a late first-quarter basket.
Arlington took control in the second quarter, using a 7-0 run to start the period. Wayne got as close as four on baskets by Grayson McBride and Mason Lee, but Arlington used an 8-2 run to end the half to take an 11-point lead, then started the third with a 9-1 run to take control and go on to the easy win.
McBride and Jack Evetovich each had nine points to pace the Blue Devils, with Lee adding seven and Anderson scoring six. Payten Gamble had four, Shea Sweetland added three and Tyler Pecena and Marcus Fertig both had free throws.
The Wayne boys play Ponca at home on Saturday and Crofton on Monday. The Wayne girls open subdistrict play against West Point-Beemer Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Norfolk High School.
