Wayne girls drop second straight, Blue Devil boys protect home court

Friday night basketball took over the Wayne High girls and boys schedules entering the weekend.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, the Blue Devils hosted West Point-Beemer.

The Wayne High girls lost 50-30 while the Blue Devil boys picked up a 66-62 victory in overtime.

In the girls game, West Point-Beemer jumped ahead 11-3 in the first quarter and then 12-5 in the second to lead 23-8 at half. The Cadets outscored Wayne, 15-11 in the third and 12-11 in the fourth. Final favored West Point-Beemer winning 50-30 to improve to 5-2 as Wayne has dropped back-to-back falling to 2-3.

Junior Haley Kramer recorded a team-high nine points for Wayne. Junior Claire Lutter added eight points as sophomore Addison Frank had four points.

During the boys outing, Wayne held a slight 14-13 lead as both teams then followed with 12 points in the second quarter. The Blue Devils led 26-25 at half. West Point-Beemer then began to pull away with a 22-14 third before Wayne came storming back with a 26-15 fourth (overtime scoring not available). Final favored the host Blue Devils winning 66-62 to improve to 4-0 as the Cadets fell to 5-2.

Senior Gavin Redden posted a team-high 18 points, followed by junior Jace Jorgensen with 15 points (5-8 FT), senior Kaden Keller recorded a double-double with 14 points (three made three’s) and 11 rebounds as senior Colson Nelsen (two made three’s) also had 14 points. Nelsen forced overtime with a three from half court at the buzzer.

Other scoring came from sophomore Jaxson Kneifl with three points and junior Brodey Munter with two points.
