Wayne girls fall behind early, Blue Devil boys knock down 10 three’s in road victory

Non-conference play took over Tuesday evening for the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams.

From North Bend, WHS visited North Bend Central.

The Wayne girls suffered a 46-29 loss while the Blue Devil boys picked up a 43-37 victory against the host Tigers.

In the girls game, North Bend took the early 14-6 first quarter lead followed by a 22-4 second quarter advantage to build a 36-10 halftime lead. Wayne outscored the Tigers in the third, 14-6 and fourth, 5-4. Final favored North Bend Central winning 46-29 picking up their seventh straight victory to improve to 12-6 as Wayne High fell to 9-10.

Wayne leaders were junior Haley Kramer with 13 points on three made three’s while sophomore Addison Frank added six points.

Other scoring came from juniors Claire Lutter and Elle Powicki both with four points as sophomore Alexis Legler tallied two points.

The Blue Devils shot 6-10 at the charity stripe.

North Bend Central was led in scoring by junior Lauren Sterup with 17 points on five made three’s as senior Lindsay Emanuel followed with 10 points.

The Tigers finished 13-18 from the foul line.

During the boys outing, Wayne held a 13-8 first quarter lead followed by a 9-8 second quarter to go up 22-16 at the break. The Blue Devils extended their lead in the third, 13-11 as the Tigers won the fourth 10-8. Final favored Wayne winning 43-37 picking up their third straight victory to now sit 16-2 as the Tigers dropped their fourth straight falling to 9-8.

Wayne leaders were senior Colson Nelsen with 13 points on four made three’s followed by sophomore Jaxson Kneifl with 12 points on four made three’s.

Other scoring came from juniors Brodey Munter (two made three’s) and Jace Jorgensen both with six points, senior Gavin Redden added four points as senior Kaden Keller tallied two points.

The Blue Devils shot 3-8 at the charity stripe as Wayne made 10 three-pointers.

North Bend Central was led in scoring by junior Cash Hanis with 17 points.

The Tigers finished 3-3 from the foul line.

The Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams will next open Mid State Conference play.

The Wayne girls will host the girls division play-in games opening with Norfolk Catholic on Saturday, February 1 playing around 4 p.m. following the Ponca vs. Boone Central 2:30 p.m. game. Earlier this season, Norfolk Catholic won 43-33 in Norfolk over Wayne back on January 17.

The Wayne boys will host on Tuesday, February 4 playing at 6 p.m. against the Pierce/GACC winner who play Saturday in Battle Creek around 5 p.m.
