Wayne girls fall behind in third, return entire team with no seniors

A third quarter burst from Arlington was too much to withstand as the Wayne High girls saw their season come to an end on the road.

From Arlington Public Schools, #1 Arlington welcomed #4 Wayne during the second semifinal game of the Class C1-5 girls Subdistrict basketball tournament on Tuesday.

Thanks to a nine-point edge in the third quarter, Arlington would hold onto the 53-39 victory.

A three at the buzzer ended the first quarter to put the host Eagles up 14-11 followed by a 15-10 advantage to extend the lead to 29-21 at half. Arlington came out strong in the third and finished with a 14-5 scoring clip while Wayne won the fourth, 13-10. Final favored Arlington 53-39 winning their third straight improving to 19-4 as Wayne had a two-game winning streak snapped ending their season at 12-14.

Again Wayne has no seniors on the team.

Wayne was led for the second straight night by junior Haley Kramer with 16 points on four made three’s, junior Claire Lutter added seven points as sophomore Alexis Legler followed with six points.

Other scoring came from sophomore Mallory Redden with three points; two-point scoring was posted by juniors Elle Powicki and Reagan McGuire along with sophomore Addison Frank as sophomore Lily Gubbels scored a point.

The Blue Devils finished 6-13 from the foul line.

Arlington leaders were junior Britt Nielsen with 21 points as well as junior Emme Timm with 12 points.

The Eagles shot 9-13 at the charity stripe.

Earlier in the evening, #2 Pierce (18-7) won 59-39 over #3 O’Neill (16-8). Arlington and Pierce will meet on Thursday at 6 p.m. to decide the C1-5 Subdistrict champion.
