NORFOLK — The Wayne High girls basketball team shot 24 percent from the field and came up short in a fourth-quarter comeback as they dropped a 45-42 decision to Lutheran High Northeast on Friday.
Wayne’s only lead of the game came early on a three-point play by Molly Hoskins, giving Wayne a 3-2 lead. Lutheran High went on an eight-point run after that to take a 10-3 lead and never trailed again.
The Blue Devils kept things close, but couldn’t warm up on the outside as LHNE held the 3-point shooting trio of Kylie Hammer, Ashton Boyer and Frankie Klausen to a combined 3-of-17 effort from beyond the arc.
Wayne made a game of it in the fourth quarter, knocking an eight—point deficit down to one with baskets by Klausen and Jenna Trenhaile and a 3-pointer by Hammer to get within 43-42. Wayne had two more chances to tie the game late, but were unable to get it done as they fell to 6-3 heading into the holiday break.
Hammer led the Blue Devils with 11 points and Gabi Meyer added 10. Klausen finished with nine points, Boyer had six, Hoskins had three, Trenhaile had two and Jamie Gamble added a free throw.
Wayne will face Gordon-Rushville in the opening round of the Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Wayne State College.
