Wayne girls take first at Crofton Invite

The Wayne High girls cross country team edged district rival Hartington-Newcastle and conference foe Norfolk Catholic by four points to take the team trophy at Thursday’s Crofton Invitational.

Three of Wayne’s five runners medaled in the top 10, led by Andrea Torres, who finished third in 21:57.32. Gabi Meyer followed in fourth at 22:36.96 and Molly Hoskins was seventh in 23:18.59. Emily Chamberlain placed 20th and Sarah Greenwald was 21st.

In boys action, Wayne was seventh and LCC finished eighth. Brandon Wacker finished 16th to lead Wayne with a time of 19:31.86. Christopher Woerdemann was 27th (21:16.99), followed by Treyton Blecke (35th), Liam Spieker (36th), Cole Hobza (40th) and Lance Muhs (41st). LCC was led by Ryan Bathke, who finished 31st in 22:01.51, followed by Michael Kurtzhals (37th), Landen Boysen (38th), Sean Aschoff (42nd), Logan Hansen (43rd) and Karsen Klooz (44th).

In junior high action, Wayne’s Fatima Lucas-Garcia was the winner in the girls race, covering 2,000 meters in 7:36.68. Dillon Olsen of LCC was the top area boys runner in junior high action with a time of 7:37.01. Ashton Munsell and Kaden Hopkins were 14th and 15th, respectively, finishing within less than a second of each other.

Wayne runs in the UNK Invitational on Monday in Kearney, while LCC is back in action Thursday at the Stanton Invitational.
