The Wayne High girls claimed runner-up honors and three school records were set at Saturday’s Mid State Conference meet in Hartington.
The Blue Devil girls were led by senior Kylie Hammer, who improved her school record in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 7 inches to highlight a day where she won three gold medals with wins in the long and triple jump and the 100-meter dash.
Hammer easily took top honors in the long jump with a winning mark of 17-9 1/2, and also took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.17 seconds. She finished second in the 200 as well to lead the Blue Devils to their runner-up finish.
Jenna Trenhaile also added to her school record mark in the discus, winning the conference title with a throw of 130-10, and Masyn Dorey improved her standing in the record book with a runner-up finish in the pole vault, clearing 9-6.
The 3,200-meter relay team of Gabi Meyer, Frankie Klausen, Andrea Torres an Molly Hoskins came away with runner-up honors in a time of 10:25.54, and Emily Armstrong continued to improve with a third-place finish in the shot put with a best throw of 35-9 3/4.
Other medal-winning efforts for the Wayne girls included a fourth by Meyer in the 800, a pair of fifths by Torres in the 1,600 and 3,200, a sixth by Skylar Mutchler in the discus, and a sixth for the 400-meter relay of Hailey Backer, Ashton Boyer, Sidney Bigerstaff and Dorey.
In boys action, the Blue Devils finished fifth and did most of their damage in field events, winning the long jump and triple jump.
The duo of Mason Lee and Cody Rogers traded positions in the two events. Lee won the long jump at 22-4 1/2 with Rogers taking third at 21-5 1/2, and they switched positions in the triple jump with Rogers going 43-2 1/2 and Lee clearing 41-5. Alex Echtenkamp gave Wayne a third medalist in the triple jump, finishing fifth at 39-6 3/4.
Wayne also scored in the throwing events. Freshman Mike Leatherdale came home fifth in the shot put at 44-4 3/4, and junior Kaden Kneifl was fifth in the discus at 131-11.
Jack Evetovich was a runner-up in the high jump at 6-0 for the Blue Devils. Wayne also scored in the 400 with Aaron Reynolds’ third-place finish, and the 1,600-meter relay of Reynolds, Tristen Landanger, Casey Koenig and Tyrus Eischeid finished fifth in 3:47.26.
Wayne closes out the regular season Thursday at the Battle Creek Invitational. They will compete in district action Thursday, May 10 at Albion.
