Wayne girls victorious during Mid State Conference play-in round

Two girls and two boys play-in games opened Mid State Conference basketball tournament action over the weekend which included the Wayne girls.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium on Saturday, the Wayne girls played the second game.

In a rematch from January 17 in Norfolk where the host Knights won 43-33, this time around it was the host Blue Devils picking up a 35-29 victory.

During the girls only contest, Wayne took a 9-2 first quarter lead followed by the Blue Devils adding to their lead thanks to a 9-7 second quarter as WHS led 18-9 at the break. Norfolk Catholic outscored Wayne in the third, 7-6 and 13-11 in the fourth. Final favored Wayne winning 35-29 to improve to 10-10 as the Knights fell to 5-14 dropping their third straight.

Wayne leaders were junior Haley Kramer with 13 points on three made three's while junior Regan McGuire followed with nine points (7-10 FT).

Other scoring came from sophomore Addison Frank with six points, junior Claire Lutter added four points, sophomore Alexis Legler tallied two points as freshman Audrey Lutter tacked on one point.

The Blue Devils shot 12-21 from the foul line.

Norfolk Catholic was led in scoring by junior Mallory Wolf  with 12 points as senior Eva Hartzell added nine points.

The Wayne High girls advance to first round Mid State Conference action on Monday, Feb. 3 playing in West Point against GACC at 6 p.m. Battle Creek will follow against Cedar Catholic.

Also in Wayne on Saturday, Boone Central won 51-38 over Ponca and will next play at Crofton at 6 p.m. on Monday followed by Pierce vs. O'Neill.

Norfolk Catholic and Ponca will play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday,.

In the Mid State Conference boys division from Battle Creek, the host Braves won 83-49 over Crofton and will next face Ponca in Ponca at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4 followed by Norfolk Catholic vs. Boone Central. Also, GACC won 44-41 over Pierce and will next play at Wayne on Tuesday at 6 p.m. followed by Cedar Catholic vs. O'Neill.

The Pierce boys and Crofton will play at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7 at Boone Central.
