With just a few more pre-holiday events on the schedule, Wayne High and Wayne State were on their home courts while girls wrestlers from Wayne, Tri County Northeast, Winside and Wakefield traveled to Pierce along with boys wrestlers of Winside and Wakefield at Wisner-Pilger as well as Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Tri County Northeast at Osmond all on Dec. 20. Kyler Parker from Wayne also competed for the Norfolk boys swim team during a weekend invite (Wayne co-op).

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, the Wayne High girls suffered a 55-35 loss while the Blue Devil boys won their third straight thanks to a 47-38 victory.

The Wayne High girls (4-2) and boys (4-2) will next travel to Ponca on Dec. 22 at 3:30/5 p.m. for a rescheduled game from earlier in the season. The JV girls game has been canceled as games will start at 1 p.m. with 'reserve' boys followed by JV boys at 2 p.m. leading into varsity action.

From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, the WSC men used a late free throw with three seconds left to win 65-64 while the Wildcat women dropped their sixth straight following a 49-40 loss to Winona State.

The Wayne State College men (7-6/3-4 NSIC) and women (6-7/1-6 NSIC) are on their moratorium break and will next visit Augustana on Jan. 3 at 1:30/3:30 p.m. (men play first).



From Pierce, fresh off winning in Elgin, the Wayne High girls wrestling team finished 11th during the Pierce Invite scoring 80.5 points among the 21 teams.

The Tri County Northeast girls placed 18th (9.5) and Winside took 20th (4.5).

Top medalists for Wayne High were posted by Nyla Bolles (140) winning her weight class while Alexandria Ziska (170) followed in runner-up.

Megan Magnuson (135) also took fourth.

In the JV division, Wayne's Leilah Bratcher (120) finished third while Zoe Bolles (155) placed fourth.

Tri County Northeast scoring came from Jenni Olson (100) who finished 3-2 falling one win shy of the medal round.

Winside's lone scorer was Avery Brummels (100) who went 2-2. 

The Wayne High girls wrestlers will be off until Jan. 2 traveling to the Winnebago Invite (9 a.m.).

Tri County Northeast will also next compete in the Winnebago Invite on Jan. 2.

Winside girls will next host an invite on Jan. 10 (10 a.m.).

Wakefield was scheduled to compete in Pierce but withdrew from competition with only two healthy wrestlers. The Trojans are off until Jan. 2 at the Winnebago Invite (10 a.m.).


From Wisner, the Wakefield boys finished 13th (54.5) while Winside took 15th (44) among the 22 teams.

Top medalists for Wakefield were Ruben Vega (165) winning his division while Hayden McAfee (120) followed in runner-up.

Winside leaders were Asher Uttecht (150) who placed third as Stratton Sellin (165) took fourth.

Wakefield boys will be off until Jan. 10 during the Summerland Invite (10 a.m.).

The Winside boys will next compete in the Newman Grove Invite on Dec. 30 (10 a.m.).

From Osmond, the Tri County Northeast boys finished sixth (73) while Laurel-Concord-Coleridge placed 10th (34.5) among the 12 teams.

TCNE leaders were posted by Landon Newton (126) and Nate Franzluebbers (285) both earning runner-up while Braxten Sebade (150) followed in third.

Taven Kent (132) and Aidan Isom (144) both finished fifth, Drayden Nielsen (157) took seventh with Logan Kraemer (157) right behind in eighth.

The top medalist for LCC came from Jake Lipp (190) in second.

Weston Patefield (138) finished fourth, Owen Johnson (106) took fifth  as Alex Allison (165) and James Recob (285) both placed sixth.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys wrestlers will compete one more time in 2025 during the Newman Grove Invite on Dec. 30 (10 a.m.).

The Allen/Emerson-Hubbard boys co-op will also next travel to the Newman Grove Invite on Dec. 30 (10 a.m.).

A third invite was on the Norfolk High swimming schedule for a member of the Wayne High boys swimming co-op on Dec. 20 during the Knight Invite at Lincoln Southeast High School.

The Panthers scored 124 points to finish seventh among the 19 teams who posted scoring.

Kyler Parker recorded a pair of 20th place finishes during the 50 freestyle (24.08) and 100 fly (59.03).

He also swam splits on the fifth place 400 freestyle relay (3:30.23) with times of 24.91/27.6 along with the ninth place 200 medley relay (1:48.44) performing the fly (25.3).

The Norfolk boys swimming team (Wayne co-op) will be off until Jan. 9-10 during the Millard South Invite (10 a.m. each day).
